What is Slippery Elm?
In the middle of the 1800's, choir singers in Cambridge, Massachusetts learned an important fact from the Native Peoples in their area. The tribes had been grinding up the inner bark of the Slippery Elm tree and mixing it with buffalo meat to calm the stomach and the bowel. They would suck on strips of the inner bark to heal sore throats and any sores in the mouth. The choir singers started the regimen of sucking on the bark before and after singing and found that their throats did not become sore, irritated and they did not lose their voices or become hoarse.
To this day, the strips of bark and Thayers® Slippery Elm Lozenges are used at Pow Wows throughout the United States by Native Peoples' singers.
Word of this natural remedy spread throughout the church choirs in New England. Over time, the word got out to opera, rock, country and contemporary singers, as well as vocal coaches, judges, lawyers, teachers, sales people and others that use their voices every day.
The Slippery Elm Tree (ulmus fulva) grows plentifully in the eastern regions of the United States and Canada. The inner bark of the tree is used for medicinal purposes.

What is Witch Hazel? Witch Hazel (hamamelis virginiana) is found in damp, open woods and along stream banks from Nova Scotia east to Minnesota and south to Georgia. It is a deciduous spreading shrub or small tree with a smooth gray/brown bark. Its astringent properties are extracted from its bark, leaves and twigs. The natural astringent tannins reduce inflammation and stem bleeding. Native Peoples applied witch hazel poultices to ease swelling and ulcers. Herbalists consider witch hazel an excellent remedy for hemorrhoids and varicose veins, as well as cuts and bruises.
Thayers® has been producing Witch Hazel since the middle of the 1800's. In 1855, the American Institute of New York Awarded Thayers a silver medal for excellence in preparation of fluid extracts, and a year later, the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanics Association awarded the company for the apparatus to produce these extracts.
