Liquid Potassium Iodide -
The Iodine Supplement, 2 oz, (World Organics)
Potassium iodide (poe-TAS-ee-um EYE-oh-dide) is used to treat overactive thyroid and to protect the thyroid gland from the effects of radiation from inhaled or swallowed radioactive iodine. It may be used before and after administration of medicine containing radioactive iodine or after accidental exposure to radioactive iodine (for example, from nuclear power plant accidents that involved release of radioactivity to the environment). It may also be used for other problems as determined by your doctor.
RESEARCH DATA
After Chernobyl Nuclear Reactor Disaster in 1986, potassium iodide was given to 10.5 million children and 7 million adults in Poland, as a preventive way against the acculmulation of radioactive iodine-131 in the thyroid gland. [1]
Radioactive iodine is a highly carcinogenic by products in nuclear reactors which had been released by the damaged reactor. Chernobyl incident demonstrated the need to protect the thyroid from radiation was greater than expected. [2]
