FAQ

Why does Oregon's Wild Harvest use Sodium Lauryl Sulfate-Free capsules?
Many capsules, including gelatin and vegetarian, contain the additive Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). SLS is also commonly used in many types of products, such as skin and hair-care products, toothpaste, garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers, and carpet cleaners. It is used as a wetting agent, detergent, food additive, surfactant, emulsifier and thickener.

SLS is used throughout the world as a primary skin irritant for testing the clinical effectiveness of healing agents. It has recently come to the public spotlight when hospital workers became ill after the carpets were cleaned.

This compound is considered an irritant of the skin, eyes and respiratory tract at high concentrations. When heated to decomposition, it emits toxic fumes of carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide and sulfur oxides.

In its concentrated form, SLS is considered by the federal government to be a hazard in the work environment and must be disposed of as a hazardous waste.

Although, there is no current evidence that SLS is toxic in the concentrations permitted for gelatin capsule manufacture, Oregon's Wild Harvest believes that it is not necessary in the manufacture of gelatin capsules. We strictly purchase capsules certified to be free from SLS because of our dedication to organic agriculture and sustainable living.

What are vegetarian capsules made of?
When vegetarian capsules first made their appearance in the dietary supplement market, we received several inquiries from customers about whether we had any plans to switch from gelatin capsules to vegetarian capsules. In the process of researching the pro's and cons of each type of capsule we discovered some interesting facts about each type of capsule.

Vegetarian capsules are made from "vegetable" or plant cellulose. Plant cellulose is a generic term for a chemical known as hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC), which is a substance widely used as an additive in tablets and topical pharmaceutical formulations.

According to the National Formulatory (NF), HPMC is chemically synthesized from cellulose, a by-product obtained from cotton waste or wood pulp. It is treated with chloromethane and propylene oxide to produce methylhydroxypropyl ethers of cellulose.

Cotton is a highly treated agricultural crop. Pesticides and insecticides are applied at every stage of growth and development. Many fields on which cotton has been grown have been deemed unfit for growing any other kind of food because of the residue left in the soil. Similarly, the wood pulp industry regularly uses fungicides and bactericides in their manufacturing process. This is retained in the pulp, and the many products that are made using it. Although HPMC is purified, the USP grade HPMC does not specify a maximum level of residual fungicides and bactericides.

According to the 'Handbook of Pharmaceutical Excipients, 2nd edition (1994), "HPMC is generally regarded as a nontoxic and nonirritant material, although excessive oral consumption may have a laxative effect. The World Health Organization (WHO) has not specified an acceptable daily intake for HPMC material.
