In addition to taking Back Pain/Sciatica, you can do many things to take care of your back and prevent or relieve pain. Here are some of the most important:
  • When lifting, always keep your back straight and bend from the knees, using the strength of your legs to lift rather than putting a strain on your back. This is called good "body mechanics."
  • If possible, avoid sleeping on your stomach. It puts a bad strain on your back and pushes your neck and spine out of alignment.
  • When you are sitting, make sure your feet are flat on the floor. If they don't reach the floor, use a collapsible footrest that you can carry with you.
  • Pain in the mid-back area is often due to stress. Concentrate on sending your breath into that area to help relieve the stress.
  • Pain in the lower-back region can come from being overweight, from an injury or strain, or lack of exercise.

  • Roll out of bed. The pain of getting out of bed can be minimized by sliding to the edge of the bed. Once there, the back should be kept rigid and the legs should come off the bed first. That motion will act like a springboard, lifting the upper body straight up off the bed.
