Is POWERBARTRIPLE THREAT organic? All Natural?
Each POWERBARTRIPLE THREAT Crisp bar uses natural whole grains such as oats and other minimally processed ingredients, but the bars are not certified organic. The vitamins and minerals used are all derived from natural sources, with the exception of Vitamin E. All bars contain dairy ingredients. What is fractionated palm kernel oil?
Fractionation is a physical process to make palm kernel oil more solid at room temperature. It involves heating and cooling the oil to remove the liquid portion (or “fraction”). This fractionation process creates a solid fat made up primarily of saturated fats that won’t melt at room temperature.
Fractionation vs. Hydrogenation Hydrogenation is another process to convert a liquid oil into a solid fat. It is a chemical process where hydrogen is added to the oil under heat and pressure, chemically altering it and making it more saturated. But during the process, trans fats are also formed. Trans fats are substances that, depending on intake and total dietary patterns, can raise total blood cholesterol levels and can raise LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and lower HDL (“good”) cholesterol levels. Both of these increase cardiovascular disease risk. The National Academy of Sciences has recommended that Americans consume as little trans fats as possible within a healthy diet.
Because POWERBARTRIPLE THREAT bars do not use hydrogenated oils you will see that the label clearly states “Trans Fat 0g”.
Where and why do we use fractionated palm kernel oil?
POWERBARTRIPLE THREAT bars are coated or dipped in a chocolatey coating. We believe that this coating make our bars more delicious and provide our consumers with a greater variety of healthy, convenient snacks to choose from. The coatings contain fractionated palm kernel oil, which is solid and stable at room temperature. Regular vegetable oil would cause the coatings to melt, even at slightly warm temperatures and is also more prone to rancidity, which can lead to undesirable flavor changes.
What is maltitol? Do POWERBARTRIPLE THREAT bars have maltitol and why?
POWERBARTRIPLE THREAT Layered bars have maltitol. Maltitol is a sugar alcohol that provides an alternative to sucrose (table sugar) in that it is nearly as sweet, contains half the calories per gram and does not cause blood sugar and insulin to spike.
I have heard that maltitol can cause digestive upset in some people. Is that true?
In a recently published clinical study, both occasional and regular consumption of maltitol were compared to sucrose and neither was associated with severe digestive symptoms.
However, some people may experience mild gastrointestinal symptoms when first consuming maltitol-containing foods or when eating several servings of the food per day. There is evidence that our systems can adapt to the intake of sugar alcohols, like maltitol, similar to the way we can adapt to increases in dietary fiber. Sugar alcohols and fiber are similar in that they are digested primarily in the lower GI tract. Regardless, the amount of maltitol in a POWERBARTRIPLE THREAT layered bar would not be expected to cause digestive upset.
