Vitamin B12, or cobalamin, is involved in many body processes and works very closely with another B vitamin, folic acid. They both work to synthesize DNA in our body and manufacture red blood cells. Vitamin B12 is also necessary for the proper functioning of our nervous system. Therefore, if a B12 deficiency occurs, nerve function can become impaired and characterized by tingling sensations and numbness.
A B12 deficiency can also cause impaired mental function. A deficiency in Vitamin B12 is thought to be quite common among the elderly, and it is a major cause of low mood among this age group. In addition, as we age, we have a lower amount of stomach acid secreted that is necessary for vitamin B12 absorption. Vitamin B12 deficiency is again likely among the elderly population, since we loose the ability to absorb nutrients as we age. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that people over the age of 50 consume a B12 supplement. Folic acid may also mask the symptoms of a B12 deficiency, so it is recommended that Vitamin B12 and folic acid are taken together. What is povidone and why is it used in some of your Nature Made® Vitamin pplements?
Povidone has a functional use in foods and tablets as a clarifying agent, separation/filtration aid, stabilizer, tableting aid, and dispersant. Povidone is a synthetic material. Povidone is regarded as nontoxic because when consumed orally from a tablet, it is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract or mucous membrane. Moreover, it has no irritant effect on the skin and causes no sensitization. Povidone is used in nutritional supplements, prescription medication and many common over the counter products like Actifed™ , Advil™ , Aleve™ , Motrin™ , Sudafed™ , Children’s Tylenol™ , and many others.
Can the bottles that your supplements are packaged in, be recycled?
All of our amber plastic vitamin bottles are polyethylene terephthalate (PETE) which is resin code 1. The caps are polypropylene, which is resin code 5. Therefore, it should be fine to place the bottle in their recycling bin.
What is a Daily Value?
The Daily Value is the amount of a nutrient the body needs based on a 2000-calorie diet for an average sized person. There are two standards that are referenced as follows: 1. Daily Reference Values 2. Reference Daily Intakes (RDIs), which replaced the term “U.S. RDA” (the values determined by FDA and used on food labels, taken from the “RDAs” which are values determined by the National Academy of Sciences for various populations groups). The Daily Value (or a RDA's) is the minimal dosage intended to augment less than perfect eating habits (the Daily Values, are the values that will be seen on the labels). However, these values do not indicate what the safe maximum amount of a vitamin you can take, or amounts that may give therapeutic benefits, in addition to keeping the body from being deficient.
